Voce mea ad Dominum.

I CRIED unto The Lord with my voice: even unto God with my voice, and He hearkened unto me.

In the day of my trouble I fought The Lord, with my hands towards Him in the night season: and I was not deceived. My foul refused to be comforted: I remembered God and was well pleased, and was exercised; yet my spirit failed.

Mine eye prevented the watches: I was troubled, and spoke not.

I confidered the days of old:

had in mind the eternal years.

And I communed in the night mine own heart: I was exercised, and fwept clean my spirit.

Will The Lord caft off for ever: or will He not apply himself to be more favourable ?

Or will He cut off his mercy for ever: from generation to generation?

Or will God forget to have mercy : and will He shut up his mercies in difpleafure?

And I faid, now have I begun: this is the change of the right hand of The Moft Highest.

I remembered the works of The Lord : for I will call to mind thy wonders from the beginning.

And I will meditate of all thy works: and I will be exercised in thine inventions.

Thy way, O God, is in holiness; what God is great as our God?: Thou art God that doest wondrous things!

Thou hast made known thy power among the people: with thine arm Thou

haft redeemed thy people, the fons of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee and were afraid : the abysses also were troubled.

Like a multitude was the found of the waters: the clouds uttered a voice. Thine arrows also pass abroad: the voice of thy thunder round about.

The lightnings shone upon the orb of the world: the Earth was moved and trembled.

Thy way is the sea, and thy paths in many waters: and thy footsteps are not known.

Thou leadest thy people like sheep: by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

[Great God! the doer of all wonderful works! who of old time didst place waters in thy fight, and then changed them to wine; we humbly

implore Thee so to hear and receive the voice of our crying, that Thou mayest ever remember to bestow upon us the abundance of thy mercy, through our Lord Jesus Chrift. Amen.]

PSALM LXXVII. [Ps. LXXVIII. E. V.] [Understanding. Afaph. An Historical Pfalm for Meditation. Of the Impiety of the Jews.] Attendite Populus.

ATTEND ye to my law, O my people: incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in parables : I will utter sentences from the beginning. Such great things as we have heard and known: and our fathers have told us. They have not been hidden from their children: in another generation.

Declaring the praises of The Lord and his powers: and the wonderful works that He hath done.

He raised up a testimony in Jacob: and gave Ifrael a law.

How great things He commanded our forefathers: to teach their children, that another generation might know it;

The children which should be born

and rise up: and shew them to their wroth: and the fire was kindled against children. Jacob, and there came up wrath against Ifrael.

That they might put their trust in God: and not forget the works of God, and should search out his command

ments.

Nor become as their forefathers: a wicked and froward generation;

A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful with God.

Children of Ephraim, who bending and shooting with bows: turned themselves back in the day of battle.

They kept not the covenant of God: and would not walk in his law.

And they forgat his benefits: and the wonderful works that He had shewed for them.

Marvellous things did He in the fight of their forefathers in the land of Egypt: in the field of Thanes.

He divided the fea, and led them through it: He made the waters to stand as it were in a vessel.

And He led them with a cloud by day: and all the night long with a light of fire.

He clave the rock in the wilderness : and gave them water as it had been out of the abyss.

And He brought water out of the rock: and drew forth waters like the rivers.

Yet they added still more fin against Him: and provoked The Most Highest in the place without water.

And they tempted God in their hearts: so that they required meat for their fouls. They spake evil of God also: they faid, Shall God prepare a table in the wilderness?

He Who smote the stony rock and the water gushed out: and the streams overflowed:

But will He be able to give bread alfo : or provide a table for his people? Wherefore The Lord heard and was

Because they believed not in God: nor put their trust in his falvation.

And He commanded the clouds above : and opened the doors of Heaven.

He rained down manna also upon them for to eat: and gave them the bread of Heaven.

Man did eat Angels' bread: He fent them food in abundance.

He removed the South wind from Heaven: and through his power He brought in the South-west wind.

He rained flesh upon them like as dust: and feathered fowls like as the sand of the fea.

And they fell in the midst of their tents: round about their dwellings.

So they did eat and were well filled, for He gave them their own defire: they were not disappointed of their luft.

The food was yet in their mouths: when the heavy wrath of God came up upon them.

And flew their fat ones: and smote down the chofen of Ifrael.

In all these things they finned yet more: and believed not his wondrous works.

And their days failed away in vanity : and their years in haste.

When He flew them they fought Him and turned back: and early in the morning they came to Him.

And they remembered that God was their helper: and that The High God was their Redeemer.

They flattered Him with their mouth : and with their tongue they lied unto Him. But their heart was not right with Him: neither were they counted faithful to his covenant.

But He is merciful and will become kind to their misdeeds: and will not destroy them.

And many a time turned He his wrath away: and did not kindle all his anger. And He remembered that they were but flesh: a wind going and returning

not.

How often did they provoke Him in the wilderness: and move Him to anger in the land without water!

And they turned back and tempted God: and provoked The Holy One of Ifrael.

They remembered not his hand: in the day when He delivered them from the hand of the afflicter.

So did He set his figns in Egypt: and his wonders in the field of Thanes.

He turned their rivers into blood: and their showers, that they might not drink. He fent flies among them and devoured them up: and the frog, and destroyed them.

He gave their fruit unto the mildew : and their labours unto the locust.

He destroyed their vines with hailftones: and their mulberry trees with the froft.

He delivered their cattle to the hail: and their possessions to the fire.

He cast upon them the anger of his indignation: indignation and anger, and trouble, sending evil angels among them.

He made a way for the path of his wrath, and spared not their foul from death: and He shut up their cattle in death.

And smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt: the first-fruit of all their labour in the tabernacles of Ham.

He took away his own people like sheep: and guided them through, like a flock in the defert.

He brought them out in hope, and they feared not: and overwhelmed their enemies with the fea.

And brought them into the Mountain of His Holiness: to His Mountain which He purchased with his right hand.

them: and by lot divided to them their land, with a line of distribution.

And He made them dwell in their tents: the tribes of Ifrael.

And they tempted and provoked The Most High God: and kept not his teftimonies.

And they turned away, and did not keep the covenant: like as their fathers they were turned aside, as a crooked bow.

They provoked Him to anger on their hills: and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images.

God heard this, and He spurned them : and reduced Ifrael exceedingly, even to nothing.

And He put away the tabernacle in Silo: his tabernacle where He dwelt among men.

He delivered their might into captivity: and their beauty into the enemy's hand. He shut up his people under the sword: and He spurned his inheritance.

The fire confumed their young men : and their maidens were not lamented. Their priests were flain with the sword: and their widows made no mourning.

And The Lord awaked, as one out of fleep: and like a mighty man furfeited with wine.

And He smote his enemies in the hinder parts : and put them to a perpetual shame,

And He rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim; But chose the tribe of Judah : Mountain of Syon, which He loved. And He built His Sanctuary as of unicorns: in the land which He founded for ever.

He chose David, also, his servant, and took him away from the sheep flocks: he took him from following the ewes great with young ones,

To feed Jacob his servant: and Israel Antiphon.

He caft out the Gentiles also before his inheritance.

And he fed them in the innocence of that have not known Thee: and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy Name.

his hands.

HOU art God, that do-eft

wondrous things.

[O Lord Almighty! most bounteous Giver of the manna of thy spiritual nourishment! regard us, we befeech Thee; and grant that, guided in all our senses by thy hand, we may be worthy to attain thy Holy Mountain, and to be glorified at thy right hand, through Christ our Lord. Amen.]

Deus, venerunt.

GOD! the Gentiles are come into

thine inheritance: thy Holy Temple have they defiled, and made Jerufalem as a store for fruit.

They have given the dead bodies of thy servants for meat unto the fowls of the air: and the flesh of thy faints unto the beasts of the land.

Their blood have they shed like water around Jerufalem: and there was no man to bury them.

We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a very scorn and derision unto them that are round about us.

How long, O Lord, wilt Thou be angry for ever?: shall thy jealousy be kindled like fire ?

Pour out thine anger upon the heathen

For they have devoured Jacob: and laid waste his dwelling-place.

Remember not our old fins: let thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we have become very poor.

Help us, O God our Salvation! and for the Glory of Thy Name, O Lord, deliver us: and be merciful unto our fins, for Thy Name's fake :

Left haply they say among the Gentiles, Where is their God?: and let there be made known among the nations before our eyes,

The vengeance of thy servants' blood that is shed: let the forrowful fighing of the prisoners, come in before thy fight.

According to the mightiness of thine arm: preserve Thou the children of them that are appointed to die.

And return to our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have blafphemed Thee, O Lord!

But we that are thy people, and sheep of thy pafture: will give Thee thanks for

evermore.

From generation to generation: we will shew forth thy praise.

[Prevent us, O Lord, with thy mercy, ere the indignation of thine anger break forth; fo that, helped by the fuffrages of the Blessed who have shed their blood for thy fake, we may be worthy to obtain thy favour, and the pardon of our fins, through our Lord Jesus Chrift. Amen.]

PSALM LXXIX. [PS. LXXX. E. V.] [To the end, for those who shall be changed. The testimony of Afaph. A Pfalm for Prayer. Voice of Priests for the Church.]

Qui regis Ifrael. THOU that ruleft Ifrael, give ear:

Thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep. Thou that fittest upon the Cherubim : manifeft Thyself before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasses.

Stir up thy power and come: that Thou mayest save us.

O God! convert us: and shew thy countenance, and we shall be saved.

O Lord God of Hosts!: how long wilt Thou be angry with the prayer of thy servant?

Wilt Thou feed us with the bread of tears: and give us for our drink tears in meafure ?

Thou hast made us for a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies have laughed us to scorn.

O God of Hosts! convert us: and shew thy countenance, and we shall be faved.

Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: Thou hast cast out the Gentiles and haft planted it.

Thou wast the guide of its journey before its face: Thou plantedst its roots, and it filled the land.

Its shadow covered the mountains: and the boughs thereof the cedars of God.

It stretched out its branches unto the sea: and its boughs even unto the river. Why haft Thou broken down the wall thereof: that all they that pass by in the way pluck of it?

The wild boar out of the wood hath rooted it up: and each wild beaft hath depastured it.

O God of Hosts! turn thyself: look down from Heaven, behold and visit this vine.

And perfect that which thy right hand haft planted: and The Son of Man whom Thou hast strengthened for Thyself.

It is burnt with fire, and dug down: but they shall perish at the rebuke of thy

countenance.

[Vifit, O Lord, thy Vine, which by the might of thy right hand Thou hast delivered from the Egypt of tribulation; so that, quickened by the light of thy countenance, it may rejoice in all good, and with plenteousness of good fruit, through Chrift our Lord. Amen.]
