Domine Deus falutis.

LORD God of my falvation!: I have cried day and night before Thee. Let my prayer enter into thy prefence: incline thine ear unto my petition.

For my foul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh unto Hell.

I am counted as one of them that go down into the pit: I am become even as a man that hath no help, free among the

dead.

Like unto them that are wounded, fsleeping in their sepulchres, whom Thou rememberest no more: and they are caft off from thy hand.

They laid me in the lower pit: in dark places, and in the shadow of death.

Thy wrath hath lain hard upon me: and all thy waves Thou hast brought in upon me.

Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me: they have made me an abomination to them.

I was betrayed, and went not forth: mine eyes languished through poverty.

I cried unto Thee, O Lord!: all the day long I stretched forth my hands unto

Thee.

Doft Thou shew wonders to the dead?: or shall physicians raise to life again, and give praise to Thee?

Shall any one in the sepulchre declare thy mercy: or thy truthfulness in destruction?

[Redeemer of all men! ineffable God of our Salvation! Who, for us going down beneath the

Earth, didft become free among the dead; hear, we befeech Thee, the morning petitions of thy family, and deliver us from the power of the wicked enemy who layeth siege against us, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.]

PSALM LXXXVIII. [PS. LXXXIX. E. V.] [Understanding. Ethan the Ezrahite. A Palm to praise God, and for Meditation. Voice of The Holy Spirit concerning Christ to The Father.]

Thee.

Lord! why doft Thou repel my prayer: and turneft away thy face from me ?

more will I fing.

From one generation to another: I will

tell forth thy truth with my mouth.

For Thou haft faid, Mercy shall be built up for ever in the Heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them.

I have made a covenant with my chofen: I have sworn unto David my servant, Even for ever will I prepare thy feed.

And I will build up from one generation to another: thy throne.

The Heavens shall confess thy wondrous works, O Lord!: and thy truth in the Church of the faints.

For who is he among the clouds that shall be compared unto The Lord: or be like unto The Lord among the children of God?

God, Who is glorified in the council of the faints: great and terrible over all them that are round about Him.

O Lord God of Hosts! who is like unto Thee?: Thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is about Thee on every

fide.

Thou ruleft the power of the fea: Thou stilleft the commotion of its waves.

Thou hast humbled the proud like a wounded man : with the arm of thy might Thou hast destroyed thine enemies. Thine are the Heavens, the Earth also is thine: Thou hast laid the foundation of the orb of the Earth and the fulness thereof; the North and the Sea Thou hast created.

Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in Thy Name: thine arm is with power.

Let thine hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted: righteousness and judgement are the preparation of thy throne.

Mercy and truth shall go before thy face: bleffed is the people, that knoweth rejoicing.

O Lord!, in the light of thy countenance they shall walk, and in Thy Name shall they exult all the day long: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.

For Thou art the Glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure our horn shall be exalted.

For of The Lord is our protection: and of the Holy One of Ifrael, our King. Then Thou spakest in visions unto thy

saints: and saidst, I have laid help upon One that is mighty; I have exalted one chofen out of my people.

I have found David, my servant: with my holy oil have I anointed him.

My hand also shall help him: and my arm shall strengthen him.

The enemy shall have no advantage against him: the son of wickedness shall not draw nigh to hurt him.

I will smite down his foes before his face: and turn to flight them that hate him.

My truth, also, and my mercy shall be with him: and in My Name shall his horn be exalted.

I will fet his hand in the sea: and his right hand in the floods.

He hath called me, Thou art my Father: my God, and the support of my falvation.

And I will make him my First-born : high above the kings of the Earth.

My mercy will I keep for him for evermore: and my covenant faithful with him.

And I will make his feed to endure for evermore: and his throne as the days of Heaven.

But if his children shall forsake my law : and walk not in my judgements;

If they profane my statutes: and keep not my commandments;

I will visit their iniquities with the rod : and their fins with scourges.

Nevertheless, my mercy will I not utterly take from him: nor will I do hurt to my truth.

Neither will I profane my covenant: nor make void the things that go forth from my lips.

Once have I sworn by my Holiness that I will not lie unto David: his feed shall abide for ever.

And his throne is like as the Sun before me: and as the Moon, perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in Heaven.

But Thou hast rejected and despised : and art displeased with thy Christ.

Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy fervant: Thou hast profaned his fanctuary on the Earth.

Thou hast broken down all his hedges: and made his strong-hold fear.

All the passers by have spoiled him: and he is become a reproach to his neighbours. Thou haft fet up the right hand of his

Thou haft turned away the help of his fword: and haft not aided him in the battle.

Thou hast destroyed him without purification and cast his throne down to the ground.

Thou hast shortened the days of his time: Thou hast covered him with confufion.

How long, O Lord, turnest Thou away for ever?: and shall thy wrath burn like

fire ?

What man is he that shall live, and not fee death?: and shall he deliver his foul from the hand of Hell?

Where are thy ancient mercies, O Lord?: as Thou hast sworn to David in thy truth?

Remember, O Lord, the reproach of thy servants : which I have kept in my bosom from many people.

Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord!: which they blafphemed for the turning away of Thy Christ. Bleffed be The Lord for evermore: So be it! So be it!

[Deliver our fouls, O Lord, from the hand of Hell; Thou, Who for our fakes didst mightily overthrow the powers of darkness; so that, finging forth the praife of thy mercies, we may be delivered as well from the shame of our fins, as from that death which is eternal, through Christ our Lord. Amen.]

PSALM XCIII. [Ps. xCIV. E. V.] [A Pfalm to David himself on the Fourth from the Sabbath. A Pfalm for Prayer. Voice of the Apostles to The Lord, as to their perfecutions.] Deus ultionum.

THE Lord is A God of vengeance: freely.

The God of vengeance hath done

Exalt Thyfelf, Thou that judgest the world: render retribution to the proud. O Lord! how long shall the finners: how long shall the finners triumph ?

Shall they utter and speak iniquity?: shall all speak who work unrighteousness? Thy people, O Lord! have they humbled: and have vexed thine heritage. They have murdered the widow, and the stranger: and flain the fatherless.

And they faid, The Lord shall not fee: neither shall The God of Jacob under

ftand.

Understand, ye unwise among the people: and ye fools, sometime be wife.

He that planted the ear, shall He not hear?: or He that fashioned the eye, doth He not confider ?

He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not He rebuke?: He that teacheth man knowledge?

The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man: that they are but vain.

Blessed is the man whom Thou shalt

instruct, O Lord : and shalt have taught him out of thy law.

That Thou mayest give rest to him from the evil days: until the pit be digged for the finner.

For The Lord will not caft off his people: neither will He forsake his inheritance.

Until righteousness be turned again unto judgment: and they that are near it are all the upright in heart.

Who will rise up with me against the malicious doers?: or who will stand with me against the workers of iniquity?

But that The Lord helped me: my foul had almost dwelt in Hell.

When I faid, My foot is moved: thy mercy, O Lord! afsisted me.

According to the multitude of my forrows in my heart: thy comforts rejoiced my foul.

Doth the feat of iniquity hold fast by thee: who framest labour in command

ment?

They will hunt after the foul of the righteous : and condemn the innocent blood.

And The Lord is become a refuge unto me: and my God the helper of my hope.

He shall recompense them their own wickedness, and destroy them in their

malice: The Lord our God shall destroy them.

[Lord of all goodness! instruct us in thy law, and be to us a refuge in time of trouble; and do Thou, Who teachest man prudence and knowledge in the judgment, forsake not thine inheritance, through Chrift our Lord. Amen.]

PSALM XCIV. [Ps. XCV. E. V.] [This Psalm is not faid at Nocturns.] [A Canticle of Praise to David himself. A Pfalm of Invitation to praise God.]

Venite exultemus.

O COME, let us be joyful in The Lord: let us rejoice in God our Salvation.

Let us come before his face with thanksgiving: and with psalms rejoice before Him.

For The Lord is a Great God: and a Great King above all gods.

For in his hand are all the confines of the Earth: and the heighths of the mountains are his.

For his is the Sea, and He made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

O come, let us worship and fall down, and weep before the Lord, who made us : for He is our God;

And we are the people of his pasture: and sheep of his hand.

To-day, if ye shall have heard his voice: harden not your hearts.

As in the provocation: according to the day of temptation in the wilderness. When your fathers tempted me: proved me, and saw my works.

For forty years was I offended with that generation: and said, they do alway err in their hearts;

And these men have not known my ways: as I sware in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest.

PSALM XCV. [Ps. XCVI. E. V.]

[A Canticle to David himself, when his house was built, after the Captivity. A Pfalm for praising God. Voice of the Apostles to the people, that vain is the service of Idols.]

SING unto The Lord a new fong: fing

unto The Lord all the whole Earth.

Sing ye unto The Lord, and bless ye His Name: be telling from day to day of His Salvation.

Declare His Glory unto the Gentiles: and his wonders unto all people.

For The Lord is great, and exceedingly to be praised: He is more to be feared than all gods.

For all the gods of the Gentiles are but devils: but The Lord made the Heavens. Praise and beauty are in his prefence : Holiness and Majesty in his Sanctuary.

Bring unto The Lord, ye kindreds of the Gentiles, bring unto The Lord Glory and Honour: bring unto The Lord Glory unto His Name.

Take up facrifices, and enter into his courts: worship The Lord in his Holy

Court.

PSALM XCVI. [Ps. XCVII. E. V.] [To David, when his land was restored. A Pfalm to praise Christ. Voice of the Apostles to believers, as to the reign of Christ.]

Dominus regnavit exultet.

THE Lord hath reigned, let the Earth rejoice: let the multitude of the ifles

be glad.

Clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and judgement are the support of his throne.

There shall go forth a fire before Him: and burn up his enemies round about.

His lightnings shone forth upon the orb of the Earth: the Earth saw it, and was moved.

The mountains melted like wax before the face of The Lord: all the whole Earth before the face of The Lord.

The Heavens have declared his righteousness: and all the people have seen His Glory.

Confounded be all they that worship carved images: and that glory in their idols.

Worship Him, all ye His Angels: Syon heard of it, and rejoiced. And the daughters of Judah exulted: because of thy judgements, O Lord!
